Overall ETF short exposure decreased from $239.2 billion to $234.1 billion, a decrease of $5.1 billion, or -2.1%, over the last thirty days. Change in short interest is comprised of mark-to-market price changes of existing shorts coupled with new short selling or covering. We saw a $0.6 billion decrease in the market-to-market value of existing short positions with an additional $4.4 billion short covering.
The broader and larger market caps rallied (the S&P 500, Nasdaq and Russell 3000 were up between 1.2% and 2.2%) while smaller cap stocks declined (Russell 2000 was down -2.9%) over the last thirty days. There was a mix of ETF short selling and covering among sectors, market caps and asset classes.
While there was $4.4 billion of net ETF short covering over the last thirty days there almost twice as many ETFs with increased short selling (64%) versus ETFs with short covering (35%). There was only one ETF with new short selling over $1 billion while there were four ETFs with short covering over $1 billion.

There were three ETFs that fell out of the top twenty-five league table over the last thirty days: the iShares S&P 500 ETF (IVV), SPDR Consumer Staples Select Sector ET (XLP) and the iShares 1-3 Year Treasury Bond ETF (SHY). ETF short interest as a % of Float is a much more fluid metric than it is for equities as ETFs are constantly created and\or redeemed which changes their shares outstanding\float numbers sometimes daily. The average SI % Float for equities is 4.79% versus 15.63% for ETFs. The following are ETFs with the highest SI % Float with overall short interest greater than $50 million. The SPDR S&P Retail ETF (XRT) continues to lead the pack along with the SPDR MSCI ACWI Climate Paris Aligned ETF (NZAC) as the only ETFs with SI % Float over 100% and S3 SI % Float over 50%.

ETF stock borrow fees rarely get extremely expensive (over 5% fee) as brokers will usually create ETF shares in order to meet stock borrow demand as rates make the share creation and hedging profitable. Rates in certain ETFs tend to climb for two main reasons, there is very little marginable or rehypothicatable stock in the market which limits the stock lending availability pool or the process of creating and hedging the ETF is difficult or very expensive (active or leveraged ETFs, ETFs with illiquid constituents or ETFs with difficult to hedge asset classes). The following are ETFs with the highest stock borrow fees with short interest over $50 million:

Institutionally, ETFs are primarily used as portfolio hedging vehicles (SPY, IWM & QQQ shorts make up 40% of total ETF short interest) so one can expect that in an upward trending market most of the larger ETF short positions would have negative returns. But mid-cap and small -cap stocks underperformed the larger cap and tech stocks over the last thirty days with the iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM) was down -2.9%.
This divergence of market performance by sectors and market caps brought about some interesting P\L results over the last thirty days. While the majority of short ETF positions, 57%, had positive returns over the last thirty days, 54% of every dollar at risk shorting ETFs was unprofitable. Additionally, profitable trades had a net return of +2.91% while unprofitable trades only lost -1.67%. Overall, ETF short sellers were up $1.02 billion in thirty-day mark-to-market profits, up +0.43%.
