With third-quarter earnings due November 4, McDonald’s recent price recovery has yet to reverse a pronounced deterioration in positioning. Over the past 52 weeks, declining active long notional and expanding short exposure have compressed the long/short ratio toward its low. The upcoming print provides a near-term test of a rebound that has so far prompted only limited short covering.
Long/Short Positioning
The long/short ratio has fallen 48% to 6.8x, close to October’s 52-week low of 6.6x and less than half December’s 14.0x peak. Because the common share price cancels out of the ratio, the compression reflects a material shift in relative positioning toward shorts, independent of the stock’s decline.
Active long notional has declined 14% to $24.3 billion, despite recovering from its October trough. The recent improvement has stabilized the ratio without meaningfully reversing its broader decline. Because notional incorporates share-price changes, the contraction should not be interpreted entirely as investor selling.
Short notional has risen 64% to $3.54 billion, a 52-week high. The accompanying increase in short shares confirms that the expansion reflects a larger bearish position, rather than simply the repricing of existing exposure.
Short Interest vs. Stock Price
Short interest has climbed from 7 million to 13.33 million shares as the price has weakened over the last 52 weeks. The sustained buildup through the decline indicates that shorts generally added exposure as the bearish price trend developed, with no sustained reversal in aggregate short exposure.
The rebound from $230 to $265 has coincided with only a modest reduction from peak short interest. Some covering is evident, but the bulk of the accumulated position remains outstanding.
Takeaway
McDonald’s has recovered in price without a comparable reversal in defensive positioning. With short shares still near their high, a more durable improvement would be signaled by expanding long exposure relative to shorts, a shift that remains limited.
