The International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) has initiated a 45,000-member strike at east coast and gulf ports over port automation and future wage increases. This is the first ILA strike since 1977 and will affect half of the ocean shipping in the United State with $4 to $5 billion of trade halted per day. Logistics and marine transportation companies will be directly affected by this strike, and we expect short selling to increase as the strike continues. Short selling in these sectors totals $5.5 billion with the top four shorts being logistics companies.

But over the last few days we have seen a reversal with a slight increase in short selling ahead of the strike. There has been $20 million of new short selling, more than offsetting a $1 million decrease in the value of shares shorted, since 9/28.

We should see continues short selling in the Logistics and Marine Transportation sectors as the strike continues. But this may be a short term, more momentum play as short sellers may continue their year-long short covering when the strike is settled.
