S3 Partners’ real-time short interest, crowding, and borrow cost analytics reveal Dongfang Electric at its most crowded since 2015.

Company Overview: Dongfang Electric (1072 HK) is one of China’s largest power equipment makers, supplying turbines, generators, and renewable energy systems.

Catalyst Context: The July rally to HK$24.65 was fueled by a 68M H-share placement at HK$15.92, initially read as bullish. S3 data revealed that dilution risk quickly outweighed optimism, with shorts accelerating into the fade during the last week of July.

Tracking the Short Build: Short interest climbed from 2% of float in January to 11% (38M shares) in September, with S3 data showing shorts added in late July and then another spike in September MTD.

Borrow Cost Spike: As of September 23, borrow costs surged to nearly 14%, a sharp increase from sub-1% levels earlier this year, evidence of financing stress and scarcity in the lendable pool.

Record Crowding Signal: S3’s Crowded Score hit 47.5 in late September — the highest since 2015. While below the key threshold 75 that indicates extreme crowding pressure, it is an early warning signal of crowding risk.

Forward Risk Signal: With price back near HK$16 and short interest, crowding, and borrow costs all elevated, S3 data highlights sustained positioning risk where market structure may drive future moves as much as fundamentals.
