A rising S&P 500 has lifted squeeze scores across the board, with 24 names scoring above 70. The group is up 13.4% month-to-date.
Recent mark-to-market losses total roughly $15.0B, and close to two-thirds of that sits in just three names: PLTR ($5.0B), LITE ($3.1B) and SMCI ($1.3B).
The most crowded names are CHTR (85) and FOXA (80), followed by ECHO and SWKS (77.5). Those up the most are PLTR, LITE and SMCI, all up more than 34%.
The crowded score is the structural measure of crowding; the squeeze score builds on it by adding the mark-to-market losses of the shorts, which are currently at a high level.
A rising market acts like the tide, lifting all boats — and all the squeeze scores with them.
Average short interest notional is $3.37B. Palantir (PLTR) is the clear outlier at $12.0B, followed by Lumentum (LITE) at $8.05B and Carvana (CVNA) at $5.34B. Workday (WDAY, $5.14B) and Kimberly-Clark (KMB, $5.00B) sit just behind.
Average short interest as a percent of float is 13.6%. The highest is CHTR at 27%, next is FOXA at 23%, followed by SWKS and ECHO at 21%. FOXA's reading reflects Fox Corp's dual share class structure.
The average squeeze score is 80.8 and the average crowded score is 62.0. FOXA and WDAY, mentioned earlier, both score 100 on squeeze risk, as does Super Micro Computer (SMCI).
The most crowded names are CHTR (85) and FOXA (80), followed by ECHO and SWKS at 77.5, against a 62.0 average.
The average stock in the group is up 13.4% month-to-date. The biggest gainers are Palantir (+41.4%), LITE (+38.6%) and SMCI (+34.6%).
The average mark-to-market loss is $623MM, for a group total of roughly $15.0B. Close to two-thirds of that comes from three names: Palantir (PLTR, $5.0B), Lumentum (LITE, $3.1B) and Super Micro Computer (SMCI, $1.3B).
FOXA and LITE, both written up recently, appear in the top 3 of three separate categories.
Palantir also appears in three categories and ranks highest in each: short interest notional, month-to-date return and mark-to-market loss. Position size and return drive the loss.
SMCI likewise appears in three categories: squeeze score, MTD return and MTM loss.
PLTR is the contrast in the group: the largest dollar short at $12.0B, but only 3% of float and the lowest crowded score at 32.5.
