Short-side returns outperformed the long returns of the World ex U.S. portfolio of the VEU US ETF, the European portfolio of the VGK US ETF, and Asian portfolio of the VPL US ETF. Short sellers have usually outperformed the market over the last five years, earning a higher positive return in down years and usually not posting as large a negative return on up years. But short sellers still needed to be good stock pickers in order to maximize their returns. Even on a more macro level, picking which sectors to short produced wildly divergent returns. Shorts in the Information Technology and Real Estate sectors had over 30% positive returns on average while the average Energy sector short was down 14.5% for the year.
